, the NHL’s second-leading goal-scorer this season, is expected to miss at least four weeks because of an injured left shoulder. The 21-year-old center was placed on injured reserve Monday but will not need surgery. He was injured early in the second period Saturday during Toronto’s 3-2 victory over Winnipeg.“It’s part of the game,” he said. “I’m going to work as hard as I can to get back as soon as possible.”Based on a minimum four-week timeline, Matthews will miss at least 13 games, with his earliest possible return Nov. 26, when Boston plays at Toronto.Defenseman Jacob Trouba delivered a clean shoulder-to-shoulder check as Matthews tried to cut in front of the net. Matthews skated to the bench, favoring his left side before heading to the locker room.“I knew the guy was coming,” Matthews said. “(I was) trying to get a shot off, but you don’t really know what to expect because you’re so close to the goalie. He took body, which is what you’re supposed to do, and just caught me on a weird angle.”This month, Matthews became the third player in NHL history with seven straight multipoint games to start a season. He has 10 goals, tied for second most in the league. He is tied for sixth with 16 pointsMatthews played all 82 games in his rookie season before sitting out 20 times in 2017-18 with various injuries.“You want to be out there so bad,” he said. “Watching the game is probably the worst part. (Not) being around your teammates, being a part of something, I think that’s kind of the hardest thing.”Coach Mike Babcock Adidas Adam Clendening Jersey
, whose team was 8-3-0 entering Monday night’s game against Calgary, said he talked with Matthews about how best to deal with the setback.“Be around the group, do what you do, train real hard,” the coach said. “Be better when you come back than you were.”Matthews suffered the same injury to his right shoulder last February and missed 10 games — the third time he was out following back and concussion problems. Still, he finished second on the team in goals (34) and points (63).“He did a ton of work this summer on his shoulders to make sure he was a stronger,” Babcock said. “These things happen. It’s too bad for the kid and yet it’s an opportunity for someone on our team to play more. It’s an opportunity for us to dig in and continue to get better.”With Matthews out, No. 3 center Nazem Kadri has been reunited with wingers Mitch Marner and Patrick Marleau — a trio that had much success in the second half of last season.“My game doesn’t change,” Kadri said. “I’ve got to be responsible defensively and have that offensive flair, especially with the guys I’m playing with.”The newly formed line of John Tavares, Zach Hyman and Kasperi Kapanen rounds out Toronto’s top six forwards. The Maple Leafs are also without winger William Nylander, who was supposed to play alongside Matthews and Marleau. The restricted free agent is trying to work out a new contract.Babcock said that for now Toronto wouldn’t be calling up an extra forward from the American Hockey League.“Everyone’s got to pick up the slack,” Kadri said. “I don’t think it falls on the shoulders of one specific player. Collectively as a group everybody can do a little bit more. We have the depth to temporarily fix the situation.” Those struggles the Vegas Golden Knights were expected to experience as an expansion team are showing up in their second season. The Golden Knights begin a daunting week-long stretch on Sunday night against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.Vegas (8-11-1) — which was 13-6-1 through its first 20 NHL games last season en route to the Western Conference crown —finds it difficult to repeat that unprecedented success.Article continues below ...Currently seventh in the Pacific Division, the Knights look to avoid their fourth loss in five games overall after a 4-1 setback to the last-place St. Louis Blues on Friday night. Vegas has also lost eight of its last 10 on the road.Compounding matters is the upcoming schedule. Over the next week, the Golden Knights play five games against Pacific Division foes, including three straight on the road and two sets of back-to-back contests.“Definitely not the position we want to be in Adidas Riley Nash Jersey
,” said Vegas winger Max Pacioretty, who has two goals and two assists in his first season with the club. “You’ve got to win against your division to make the playoffs, and I know we’re very early in the season right now, but we’ve got to string together some wins right now.”The Knights are 2-0-1 within their division.Last season, the team averaged 3.27 goals per game, but has seen that figure dip to 2.45 per contest. William Karlsson, coming off a career-high 43 goals last season, has just four so far. Erik Haula, a 29-goal scorer in the club’s first campaign, is reportedly “month-to-month” with a leg injury and key acquisition Paul Stastny hasn’t played since Oct. 8 (lower-body injury.)Karlsson had two goals versus Edmonton last season — the only Vegas player to score more than one.But the Golden Knights are getting a key performer back. After completing a 20-game ban for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, Nate Schmidt is expected to make his season debut. He was second on the team among defensemen in scoring with career highs of five goals and 31 assists, and added seven points (three goals, four assists) in the playoffs.“He’s one of our best players, so he’s going to make a difference all over the ice, I hope,” Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said Friday. “Solid guy Adidas Anthony Duclair Jersey
, moves the puck, skates well, you know what kind of player he is and he’s a big part of our group.”The Knights went 1-2-1 against the Oilers last season with both regulation losses coming in Alberta.Edmonton (9-9-1) heads home after a 4-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. Alex Chiasson and Connor McDavid scored for the Oilers, but backup Mikko Koskinen surrendered two third-period goals and the Oilers dropped to 5-1-0 when leading after 40 minutes.“Every loss stinks, but it was a big game for us and we didn’t get the two points. That’s all that matters,” said center Leon Draisaitl, who assisted on McDavid’s 11th of the season.McDavid has a team-high 10 points (three goals, seven assists) at home in 2018-19 and was the Oilers’ top producer against Vegas last season with eight points (two goals, six assists) in four games. He had a pair of three-point nights in two home matchups with Vegas.“I’d say he’s the best player in the league. He’s a lot of speed and a lot of fast,” Gallant said of the reigning two-time scoring champion who needs two goals for 100 for his career.Cam Talbot has surrendered 14 goals while losing four straight starts for Edmonton. He yielded 11 goals en route to wins in three of four meetings with Vegas. The Oilers, who defeated the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday at Rogers Place, seek consecutive home wins for the first time this season.“We get another chance (Sunday) to win a hockey game. We’ll do everything we can to do so,” Draisaitl said.
